The Annual McDowell Alumni Soccer Game raises money for the Andrew Polakowski Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Andy Polakowski, a 2006 graduate of McDowell High School who played soccer at McDowell for 4 years. Andy exemplified the characteristics of sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation and competition and this scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who lives up to these same standards. Andrew was killed in an elevator accident in his freshman year at The Ohio State University. Alumni men and women from the class of 1980 to the present have participated in the games. Family, friends and soccer fanatics come to Gus Anderson field to watch the game. The 2009 event saw the registration of 40 players which included 10 female and 30 male players, 7 sets of siblings and players from the first McDowell soccer teams competing with players from the current McDowell team. The class of 2006 (Andrew’s graduation year) had the best showing with 10 players on the field. The class of 2002 with 6 alumni taking the field had the second best showing. |
